European Brain Research Institute - EBRI Rita Levi-Montalcini

Pietro Calissano, (male) Full Professor in Neurophysiology, is Group Leader at EBRI and president of the institute. After the degree in Medicine in 1964, he started working with the Rita Levi-Montalcini, Nobel prize for the discovery of NGF and founder of EBRI: this fruitful collaboration continued for the rest of her life. In 1965 he was researcher at CNR, then in 1966-67 he was Research Associate at the Washington University of St. Louis (US).
He spent the period 1970-71 at the Institute of Animal Physiology, Cambridge (UK) and in 1973 became Research Director at CNR and spent a Fellowship at the Weizmann Institute, Israel. In 1977-78 he was Visiting Professor at the Harvard Medical School and in 1986 was appointed Full Professor in Neurophysiology at "Tor Vergata" University of Rome. In 1988 was appointed Director of the Institute of Neurobiology (later the Institute of Neurobiology and Molecular Medicine) of CNR in Rome. Associated with document Ref. Since 2012 he is President of EBRI. Pietro Calissano has published 167 scientific papers in international scientific journals, has attended 85 international meetings as an invited speaker and communicated his scientific experimental work at numerous seminars in different Italian and foreign universities.
Calissano has published 30 articles of divulgation in different italian newspapers and written two books. He has acted as scientific director and expert in biomedicine for 6 distinct Encyclopedias edited by the Treccani Institute. He's member of several Scientific Associations: EMBO, Italian Academy of Sciences, Istituto dell´Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani. Main Prizes and awards: Feltrinelli prize, Italian Academy of Sciences, Neuburgh prize.

Hir research interests are focused on the physiopathology of neurodeneration, in particular the molecular and cellular biology of tau, synucleins, amyloid beta precursor proteins (APPs) and other misfolding proteins in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and related neurodegenerative disorders of aging.
His current projectas are focused on the molecular mechanisms of tau-mediated neurodegeneration, and the role of NGF, by a combination of different experimental approaches.
